Eleven year-old Joseph Victor Bibbs (better known as Jovie) has a problem. Ever since his father went missing during World War I, he and his mother have lived hand-to-mouth in a seedy attic room of a Cincinnati boarding house. Now Nellie Bibbs is ill and needs an operation. Unless Jovie can find a way to convince the Army to declare his father officially dead and release his back pay, he'll have to go to an orphanage or else live on the streets. Terrific middle school historical fiction.

Michael Capek took a historically factual event--the visit of President and Ms. Harding to Cincinnati, Ohio and the appearance of a mysterious young boy at their public locations on that day and created a fictitious backstory to supplement the story that history did not tell us.The author has an ability to bring the reader into the story, recreating the look and feel of the time period and thus, present a story that both teaches a bit about the time in which it was written and yet entertain the audience. The characters are easy to connect and emotionally identify with, and yet, it is not overly languid or sappy, even though the main character is undergoing some personally very difficult circumstances.
What I liked best about this book was the fact that Michael Capek fleshed the characters out with a very realistic sense of who they might have been. Rather than creating a protagonist who shines, his has enough faults and flaws to seem realistic for his circumstances. He addresses such sensitive and deep topics of racism and classism, for example, in a way that conveys their significance to his target audience without losing the pace or intended story or being preachy and moralistic.
All in all, this is a great read. Not only does it harken back to a more simple, somewhat slower time in a River City, but it spotlights a signficant local historical day in an entertaining, well-paced fashion.

Perfect for a middle school to adult reader.
I couldn't put the book down once I started reading THE STEAMBOAT SHUFFLE! A great read for those of you who love the river, steamboats, and a bit of history! The author keeps your attention throughout the book, never knowing what surprises might pop up next! This is an excellent book for middle school through older adults. Would be a great addition to any middle school classroom.
The book is so well made. The pages are thicker than most books, so they aren't as flimsy. The cover is great. I love that each page looks like an old scroll. The story itself is excellent! I can't wait to see more from Jovie's adventures. I loved how the author wove history into an easy to follow, engaging story which happened to take place so close to my home. It made me want to visit Cinicinnati and really study the history and culture of the city rather than just site see. The book is a great read for middle schoolers all the way up to adults. I couldn't put it down!
While it may have been written with middle school children in mind, THE STEAMBOAT SHUFFLE is a very enjoyable book for older children and adults also.
It's obvious that the author spent a great deal of time researching the specifics of President and Mrs. Harding's visit to Cincinnati in 1922, as well as other historical aspects of that general time period. He did a fantastic job of weaving together fact and fiction to create believable characters and an engaging story, one that also provides many teaching/learning opportunities, as well as some valuable life lessons.
I highly recommend this book for both children and adults. Those who live in or are familiar with the greater Cincinnati area will find it to be of special interest, as they will recognize many of the locations and landmarks and will learn a bit of local history that they may not have otherwise known.
