I have enjoyed the plot and characters of this book, however it isn't formatted well for the Kindle. With only a regular paragraph break, the whole scene or point of view changes. It can be very confusing. It either needs a change scene symbol, multiple spacing or chapter changes for points of view. Several names are split by hyphens when they shouldn't be. This publisher normally does a good job in the kindle versions, so I assume it is because the book was published several years ago. However, it is annoying and should be fixed. If you can look past that, the book certainly has its share of humor and sweetness.

Whirlwind Cathy Marie Hake 9780764203190 Books Reviews

I would have given this book 5 stars if the book was formatted better. Throughout the book, the scene changes without warning. One moment we would be in a study with the heroine and her former employer and in the next paragraph, we would be on a pier and the hero would be about to board a ship for America. This happened more than once in most if not all the chapters!! There should have been extra space between scene changes or lines or even asterisks. Also throughout the story, numbers will pop up in the middle of a sentence. I would give the story itself 5 stars. I really enjoyed it. It would be a 5 star book if it was formatted correctly.
I love Cathy Marie Hake's books to begin with and this one did not disappoint me. Where this is a stand alone book it is always fun to revisit previous characters from other books which this one did ... Forevermore and Fancy Pants are two of them! I truly enjoyed this book and I, for one did not feel they spent too long of a time on the ship. Now, I did agree with some of the others that Mr. Clarke was kind of a pain as far as personality-wise to begin with, but one has to remember, people often start out one way and then have to learn to compromise to make a relationship work. It is the compromising factor that has such a problem in so many of today's marriages and relationships to get to marriages. We have to learn to bend more so we do NOT break. Nanny Millicent was cute with her love of children and honestly with her love of life ... one could not help but learn to fall in love with her. This is a sweet book that makes an enjoyable read with a lot of light- hearted reading mixed in. Where there are some heartbreaking issues mixed in as well, that just adds to the flavor of this book ... that I did also enjoy. I would not, and did not give it a full five stars but very comfortably gave it a four star rating for enjoyment!, Good reading overall!!!!
I started reading Cathy Marie Hake with Fancy Pants, and I haven't been able to stop. Though my experience with the Only in Gooding! series bounced around, I have come to regard this series as one of my absolute favorites.
Whirlwind was fun to read; the characters we meet for the first time- Daniel, Millie, Isabelle, and the kids- as well as the familiar names and faces from the previous two books are warm and personal. The characters are initally what makes a reader want to continue reading.
Like the rest of the series, Whirlwind begins with an introduction of the two main romantic characters; in this case, Millicent Fairweather and Daniel Clark. We get a good view of the surface hearts of these two and the series of events that follow are what build upon that. Millie is a competant caregiver; Daniel is a loving but slightly inept father who only wants the best for his son.
As the story goes on, we get to be introduced to the characters' strengths as well as their weaknesses. Millie is flexible and smart, but tends to be very formal with everyone but children. Daniel is organized and generous, but he tends to be slightly dictatorial. When he realizes that he has feelings for Millie, he becomes somewhat overbearing, especially when he thinks he's only being ultra-conscious for her safety. Which, of course, presents a miscommunication that ends up hurting Millie's feelings.
Eventually, as with all good romance, the pair iron out most of their problems- though by no means are they a couple without problems- and come to an understanding that works to complement each other's strengths. Through it all, Mrs. Hake has woven God's love as an example to follow, and a template for every relationship.
I found this to be an interesting and fun romance with the added historical tidbits and suspense in the story line. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters' interactions. Learning about Ellis Island was fascinating.

Someone in the reviews criticized the mention of coyotes attacking cattle. However in looking into this I found this "The National Agricultural Statistics Service reports that 95,000 calves were lost to coyotes nationwide in 2000. That's 65 percent of calf loss to predators." Another article wrote "In one week this spring a rancher near Belt, Mont., lost three of his first five newborn calves to the same male and female coyote pair until a hunter was able to eliminate the threat. In another case, Earl spoke of a Montana sheep rancher who lost 21 sheep to a single coyote in one night." Others have videos of packs attacking , although it appears to be less frequent, to attack in packs. So I feel the criticism by that comment was not right.

Some have criticized the length of the ship travel---this set the stage for what was to happen and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A good read for those of you that enjoy a Christian romance with a bit of history and suspense thrown into the story line !
I loved this story about Daniel and Millicent. Two people who didn't know they needed each other wound up in a marriage of convenience. Of course, they fell in love. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
