Poison Your Grace A Simon Elizabeth Mystery Peg Herring 9781432825362 Books

Really enjoy this series. It has been a few years from the first book. Henry VIII has died and life has moved forward. Elizabeth is living at the palace with her ailing brother. Simon is nearly done with his apothecary apprenticeship and Hannah is now his affianced. Hugh has left the guard. They have all drifted apart. On the opening of the book, Simon randomly sees Elizabeth pass in the street, where she clearly recognizes but then ignores him. Shortly thereafter his master is called to see to a death in the palace - Elizabeth had developed this plan to get Simon involved hence her snub. When it is called murder and another death follows soon after Simon Hannah and Elizabeth work together to find the killer. I had all the piece of motive from rather early on for the one big surprise piece and yet the killer plot didn't occur to me. Really engaging and interesting take on Elizabeth. Retains the aloof strong keep your head down variety of the princess years, but adds a flair for danger, a sense of duty, and a softer side all with plausible reason to have these disparate views of her character in her constant sense of danger and inability to safely trust anyone

After reading, "Her Majesty's First Murder", I really looked forward to the next in the series. I was not disappointed. Peg has another hit on her hands. One becomes fond of the characters and entranced in the tale. The mystery takes twists and turns as this unlikely trio and their friends gradually put together the pieces of the puzzle. This is truly a book worth reading and yes, I am looking forward to the next. Peg pens a story without having to add titillating passages or crude language. They are classy, strong, and humorous on their own merit and stimulate the mind and the imagination, as a good book should.
The second book in the series, this entry is well-plotted and plausible. Simon and Hannah make very agreeable amateur sleuths. The tension in and behind the scene, with HRH Princess Elizabeth having to guard practically every thought, word and deed, and involve her two friends in the deception, is palpable and engaging. Looking forward to reading the third book.
In 1552, King Edward VI sends a messenger to escort Thomas Carthburt Master Apothecary to Whitehall. His apprentice Simon Maldon accompanies Master Carthburt. Thomas explains to his apprentice the king wants to know what killed Lord Amberson who was healthy while dining with the monarch when suddenly he was in horrific agony. Carthburt believes arsenic poisoning is the cause. Lord Protector Dudley assigns the apothecary to provide whatever the king requires to keep him safe, but warns them to be silent and not to investigate.

A second death occurs when Marie apparently trips and breaks her neck. While everyone assumes a sad accident happened, Simon wonders otherwise with two deaths on the same day being quite a coincidence. Most at Whitehall look at ambitious Princess Elizabeth, second in line to the throne, as trying to poison her ailing brother. Elizabeth fears the real culprit is framing her and will try again so she contacts Simon to assist her like he did six years ago (see Her Highness' First Murder). Simon's fiancée Hannah, transfers from Hampstead Castle to go undercover at Whitehall. Additional poisonings and other accidents all point at Elizabeth. With Simon and Hannah, Elizabeth investigates the closed castle conspiracy.

The key to the Simon & Elizabeth (& Hannah) Mystery is that the princess comes across plausible as an amateur sleuth. The story line is fast-paced from the moment the messenger escorts to the apothecary and his apprentice to the palace and never slows down until the final denouement. Fans of Karen Harper's Elizabeth I Mystery and Fiona Buckley's Ursula Blanchard Mystery will want to read this strong entry that occurs several years before the princess becomes the queen.

I've enjoyed this series.
Actually bought Poison, Your Grace by mistake. Turned out to be a good read - interesting, well written, good plot, surprise ending. Peg Herring has been added to my favorite authors list.
A delightful imagining of Elizabeth I at the time before she took the throne. The characters feel real, the historical locale is vivid, the pacing keeps you involved, and the plot is interesting with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and fully intend to read the next in the series. I love Peg Herring's writing, regardless of what pen name she's using. Every bit as good as the Maggie Pill mysteries.
