HeartShaped Bruise Tanya Byrne Books
Wow, what an AMAZING read! I finally started the book the other day thinking I'd read a few chapters before it got too warm to think and before I knew it I was almost halfway through. I just love the way Emily tells her story. She's unapologetic but it's more than that, there's also a vulnerability under the surface that comes through in her need to tell the story her way, in her own time, giving slight glimpses only before reverting back to the everyday of life in the ward. It speaks to a need to control something, anything, even if its only the way that her version of the story comes out. You just get such a sense that Everything else has been taken away from her and she just so needs this offhanded telling, this blasé cover that she constructs. I just kept thinking one more chapter, then I'll get up, one more, then I'll get dinner. But the way the story is meted out you just feel so compelled to keep reading.I absolutely Loved this book and will share and recommend it with Everyone I know!! It was so much more than just the story itself, it was the way the story was presented, it was Emily's voice, the way her bravado slowly cracked. I cannot believe this is a debut and will most definitely keep an eye out for this author! One of the best books I've read in a while and one that I can tell will stay with me. There was just something so beautifully haunting about it, like I know I shouldn't care for Emily so much, she tells you herself from the start that she's evil, but she's also just so Real. Just WOW, that's really the only thing left to say!!

HeartShaped Bruise Tanya Byrne Books Reviews
Don't waste your time reading this. It's badly written and boring. I've nothing good to say about this book at all.
A beautifully written narration from a damaged girl in prison who descriptive language draws you into her tale. I was enthralled by the images she paints with her words.
When I opened the parcel, the book still had its label from the public library it had been borrowed. Hard to explain.
I felt like I was right inside Emily's head and could empathise with her completely. It should have been obvious but I didn't guess exactly what she'd done. Great suspense.
I cried more than once for this character. Beautifully written. I have no other words. Read it for yourself and tell me why I loved it so much.
This is a very dark book, very well written, as if it were a teenager's diary (she says it is not a journal), where she tries to talk about what she's done. Something so terrible that she's in prison - a Young Offenders Institution actually, but the feeling is the same.
She can't talk to the shrink at the facility -mostly because she thinks she is beyond help- so she puts everything in this diary. She's not trying to excuse herself - she's not sorry, as she states right at the first page. It's just her story.
I think the most brilliant thing about this novel, is the way Tanya Byrne doesn't tell us, until the very end, what was it so horrible Emily has done.
That way, we can bond to her, feel her pain, try to excuse her actions even. Had we known the nature of her crime right at the beginning, we would be judging her all along, and would never be able to connect to her, to really hear her story, her broken spirit...
A fantastic debut. I'll be looking forward for more from this author.
I honestly cannot recall just how this British YA book first caught my attention. But after placing my special order to London and finishing it, I am so happy that it did catch my eye! Immediately engrossing, this book quickly draws you in and does not let go until the last page - I read it in just one evening! It is quite fast-paced and despite knowing that Emily has done something terrible from the very first page, it becomes impossible not to like her. The diary frame works very well and certainly adds to the inviting air of the story as it draws you in to find out just why Emily is so "evil" and what she has done to land her in this youth psych ward. As the story unfolds, Emily's fragility, combined with her sly comments and bravado, even with her shockingly cold cunning on top of it all, still makes her a shockingly sympathetic character. The book is very well done and one of the stronger "realistic" YA novels that I have read in a while.
Byrne creates Emily's notebook with a surprising ring of authenticity to it. Pop references add to this by adding a very current overtone. The book has an original feel to it, too. It does remind me a bit of John Marsden's Letters from the Inside that I recall deeply loving when I was actually the intended age for the YA market. Both novels share a genuine sort of grittiness that is so appealing. I am not sure if Bryne's second novel will be any easier to get Stateside, but I definitely plan on checking it out!
