I love mystery novels. My favorite mystery books will withhold the big reveal until the last second, and it is always something I never suspected, yet is completely plausible. They have characters that I grow to care about throughout the book, and I always feel anxious about what will happen to them. I want the mystery solved, and the characters to find peace (and happiness if at all possible). This book met none of those requirements. I found all of the characters to be annoying, whiny, or despicable (sometimes at the same time).
A woman's terrible husband goes missing, and the only insight into their marriage shows him being a total jerk as he is about to go camping with their daughter. Then when the husband goes missing (presumed dead), I am supposed to feel sad. PS, if there is one character we should really sympathize with, it's the poor daughter, but the main character is so caught up in her husband's disappearance, she seems to gloss over her child.
The plot rambles, and leads the reader down a very clear rabbit hole, but then at the last minute decides to completely change directions. Honestly, I didn't find it suspenseful. I was mad. I felt betrayed by this book that simultaneously took way too long to get to the point, threw in completely random story lines that seemd legit, but were dropped without a trace, and also didn't really spend any time explaining or exploring the heart of the mystery.
My alternative ending includes the husband being dead with either Sondra or the wife of the guy who embezzled all that money. Then the reporter (whose story line just vanished), would have plenty to talk about. I honestly don't care if he took the money or not. Then the daughter could have been found stranded in the cabin or a cave (just to add interest). But she would live and be reunited with her mother, so all the mother's suspicions and fears would have been justified. Also, the love interest with the sheriff would seem better since her husband would have been a despicable person.
Finally, the whole "Kate is a liar, but also my best friend story line"? Just pick one, anyone, and stick with it!
I respect writers and their craft even though it may not seem like it. It just really bothers me when I read a book with potential for greatness, and it does not measure up.

This was a good book. I would have given it five stars but I was able to put it down and not get back to it for a few days. When I do something like that, it normally bothers me. Not this time. It was not a page turner but it was very well written.
For the most part, this book was an engrossing read. I enjoyed the overall story-line and found it interesting. I did believe that parts of it related to the aftermath of the disappearance and how Abby was getting through it were drawn out - and could have likely been edited down probably 20-30 pages. I also found the ending a disappointment - not necessarily a bad ending, I just was disappointed. I would probably still read other books by this author.
This was a pretty good story, but not very realistic. A supposedly career woman goes through her ordeal like a ninny because people were trying to protect her. In reality, she would have asked the questions herself early on instead of being persuaded to just let it go.
I could not put this book down. Every chapter led me to the next one, with me still unable to figure out the plot. I loved the descriptive writing, especially the details about the state of Texas, since I live here. I was able to empathize with the main character and her dilemma. I admired her courage and will to find out the truth. I totally enjoyed this story and cannot wait until the author's next book. I will be looking for it.
I found myself skimming pages just to get through the book to find out what happened to father and daughter, only to be very disappointed. Also, way too much conversation between the characters but with little said or constant repetition. The main character was frustratingly stupid! I would not recommend this book.
This will not show a "Verified Purchase" with , I bought this in December, 2013 and the copy I purchased isn't available because a new edition come out so I will keep my review about the "contents" only because I'm sure any errors in the copy I got have been corrected .... with that said, I really enjoyed the book, even with the clues left I was still surprised by the ending. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good read while trying to figure out what happened along the way.
Death in the family, no matter the circumstance, is hurtful. Death of old-aged parents, who've lived long and full lives is not exempt. Even more for spouses... And it's true what is said, how unnatural it is for children to precede their parents in death. So, it didn't surprise me how, in the story, Abby almost lost all of her sense and bearings when her husband and daughter disappeared after a devastating flood.
I've been doing a reading marathon of Sissel's books these past couple of weeks, and I've concluded that I'm strong enough to be inundated with too much drama without choking. The thing is, all things come to an end...winter gives way to spring; dawn breaks the dark of night; grieving ends. Just as in Sissel's stories, there's always redemption, and just like her characters, after all the heartaches, I feel the relief at the end.
